ITHACA, N.Y. – Twelve different players scored as the Ithaca College men's basketball led wire-to-wire on Tuesday with a 108-76 win over the Wells College Express at Ben Light Gymnasium. The win moved Ithaca's season mark to 4-3 overall while the Express fell to 4-2 on the year.
Ithaca jumped out to a quick lead after scoring 10 of the game's first 11 points including eight unanswered to start the game. The Express converted back-to-back baskets to make it a 10-5 game with just over three minutes gone by, but the Bombers pushed their advantage to 18 points courtesy of an 11-1 run over the next six minutes capped by an old-fashioned 3-point play by junior
Tyler Lemza to make it 24-6.
The Bombers built their largest lead of the game, 30-8, after consecutive 3-pointers from
Marc Chasin and
Matt Flood, but the offense stalled over the next 6:48 with just one made field goal as Wells climbed its way back into contention with a 15-5 run to make it 35-23 with 2:44 left in the opening stanza.
The home team stretched its lead back up to 19 points with
Joey Flanagan and Chasin combining for the Bombers' final 10 points of the half before a pair of free throws by the Express with one second left on the clock made it a 17-point game, 45-28, at the break.
The lead remained at 17 points for Ithaca over the first seven minutes of the second half until Ithaca dropped 19 of the game's next 20 points including 12 unanswered capped by lay-up and free throw from Flanagan to give the Bombers an 84-51 edge with just under nine minutes to play.
Wells would string together six unanswered points late in the half but the margin was too great as the Bombers cruised to a 36-point win.
As a team, Ithaca drained a season-best 16 3-pointers and shot .494 (39-for-78) from the field overall. Defensively, the Bombers forced Wells into 19 turnovers and out-rebounded the Express 34-29.
Chasin led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-20 shooting. The junior guard also added nine boards and four assists. Flood finished with 14 points and five rebounds while freshman
Gabe Perez-Ronchetta contributed eight in the win. Flanagan had a breakout game with a season-high 19 points including four from behind the arc and Lemza notched seven points, four rebounds and three helpers.
Brendan Till added nine points off the bench with three 3-pointers.
The Bombers travel to Schenectady at 7 p.m. on Thursday for a non-conference matchup against the Union College Dutchmen.
