Ithaca Edges Out Stevens On Last-Second Foul Shot

Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Ithaca College men's basketball team earned another conference victory Friday evening, defeating the Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 71-70 on a last second foul shot. The win improves Ithaca's overall record to 5-8, including a mark of 2-2 in the conference. The Ducks fall to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in the Empire 8.

Ithaca shot 23-of-56 from the floor, good for 41.1 percent on the night. The Bombers hit 10-of-34 shots from beyond the arc, and 15-of-18 from the three-throw line. Ithaca's bench was able to outscore the bench of the Ducks, 16-14. The Bombers also held an edge in points off turnovers, 17-14.

Freshman Marc Chasin led the Bombers with 27 points, adding five rebounds, a block and a steal in the start. Junior Sam Bevan recorded 12 points in the victory, also chipping in with a team-high five assists. Senior Keefe Gitto paced the Bombers with seven rebounds, while also recording eight points. Sophomore Carlin Champion recorded 10 points in reserve.

Both teams kept an even pace for the majority of the opening half, as neither was able to gain a strong advantage until roughly 11 minutes into the frame. After the Ducks jumped out to a 22-21 lead, Ithaca scored seven-straight points. A three-pointer from Bevan capped the drive, giving the Bombers a 28-22 lead. Stevens rallied to take the lead back with 1:10 remaining, putting the Ducks ahead by a score of 37-38 at the break.

A three ball from Chasin to open the second half set the tone, once again securing a lead for the Bombers. The shot sparked a 14-2 run over the next five minutes, giving Ithaca a 51-40 lead.

The Ducks chipped away at the Bomber advantage for the remainder of the half, but Ithaca didn't relinquish the lead over the next 15 minutes. With 30 seconds remaining, Chasin hit a free throw to give the Bombers a 70-67 lead. After a Stevens' timeout, the Ducks nailed a three pointer with 10 seconds left to even the score at 70-70.

The Bombers had enough time for one more rush down the floor, making way for a missed three-pointer with just seconds remaining. Stevens was charged with a loose ball foul on the rebound, giving Bevan an opportunity for free throws with just one second left in regulation. Bevan hit his first shot, giving Ithaca the 71-70 lead. Although Bevan missed the second shot, Stevens was unable to get off a play, giving the Bombers the conference victory.

Ithaca returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 17 in another E8 contest at Hartwick. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
