Pittsford, N.Y. – The #18 Ithaca College baseball team (18-8-1, 8-4 Empire 8) dropped both ends of Sunday's doubleheader to host St. John Fisher (22-8, 7-4 Empire 8), losing the opener 4-0 and dropping game two 6-5 in 10 innings.
In game one, the Cardinals scored all four of their runs in the first inning. Freshman
Jimmy Wagner allowed just two hits over the rest of the contest while throwing his first career compete game. He struck out a career-high six batters.
The Bombers were held to just two hits – both by senior first baseman
Mike Preite. He reached base all three times he came to the plate, singling in the second, leading off the fourth with another single and reaching on an infield error in the first.
Preite's single in the second came between walks to sophomore third baseman
Colby Gee and senior shortstop
Tim Henry that led to the Bombers loading the bases with one out before the Cardinals retired the last two hitters of the inning.
In game two, St. John Fisher erased a 4-1 Bomber lead with five runs in the bottom of the eighth before Ithaca tied the game in the top of the ninth.
Senior second baseman
Matt Keller was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth inning; a wild pitch and an infield grounder moved him to third and
Preite's infield grounder brought him home with the tying run.
The Bombers had taken their lead with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Three Cardinal errors, two passed balls and a wild pitch during the two innings made all four runs unearned. In the sixth,
Gee reached first when St. John Fisher's catcher couldn't handle a third strike. After Preite walked, freshman Vinny Gneo singled in Ithaca's first run and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jeffrey Mathers scored
Preite (who'd reached third when
Gneo's single was botched in the outfield).
An inning later,
Keller and senior right fielder Teagen Baresi both reached on infield errors to open the frame. After another passed ball moved the runners up a base, Keller scored on a wild pitch and
Baresi crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by
Gneo.
Gneo and sophomore catcher
Corey Caswell both had two of Ithaca's eight hits.
Freshman
John Prendergast whiffed seven Cardinals while allowing six hits over 7.1 innings. Senior
Tucker Healy relieved
Prendergast and picked up all six of his outs by strikeout.
Bombers play a non-conference game at Oneonta Wednesday.
