Cortland Beats Ithaca Men's Basketball 84-67

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Cortland men's basketball team defeated Ithaca 84-67 Tuesday night at Corey Gymnasium. The Red Dragons improved to 3-0 on the season and Ithaca fell to 1-2. The Bombers return to action Friday at home against Wells, in Ithaca's first home game of the season, the start of a three-game homestand.

Ithaca trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half but went on a 10-0 run to cut the Cortland lead to just four points. The Red Dragons scored six points in the final minute of the stanza and held a 37-27 advantage at halftime. The Bombers shot 29.6 percent from the floor in the first half.

Cortland extended its lead in the second half and maintained a double-digit lead until 2:26 remained in the game when Sean Rossi made a 3-pointer from the right wing to bring the Bombers to within nine at 72-63. It was the closest Ithaca would come in the final 20 minutes.

Andrei Oztemel scored 14 of his 23 points in the second half. He was Ithaca's leading scorer and made four shots from behind the arc. Frank Mitchell was 6-for-8 from the field and finished with 15 points. Travis Warech has 12 points and Rossi scored 11. Mitchell led the Bombers with 12 rebounds, Rossi had five assists.

Cortland converted 27 of 37 free-throw attempts, while Ithaca was 14-for-21 at the line. The Red Dragons have won the last two games in the series between the teams after Ithaca previously won five in a row.
