ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca field hockey team (7-11) rallied from a two-goal deficit at halftime but came up short in a 2-1 loss to Houghton (9-6) Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium to conclude the 2012 season. It was the first meeting between the teams since 2006, as Houghton is a provisional member of the Empire 8 this year and will gain full membership for the 2013-14 academic year.
Houghton started off with two quick goals in the first 10 minutes of the first half to build a 2-0 lead.
Ithaca junior
Lindsay Flanagan scored her sixth goal of the year early in the second half to bring Ithaca within one. The unassisted goal came on a one-timer deflecting off a Houghton defender on the left side of a wide open net.
At halftime, Ithaca's four seniors were honored in their final regular season game:
Abbey Lind,
Julia Conroy,
Samantha Grassi, and
Kelly Singleton.
Singleton started in net for Ithaca, and made four saves in the first half. Grassi made five saves in the second half. Ithaca was outshot 14-13 but held the lead in penalty corners 13-6.
