Field Hockey Tests Nationally-Ranked William Smith Until Closing Seconds

First-Ever Night Game at Higgins Stadium

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca field hockey team (0-3) played close against #14 William Smith (5-0) through the entire game, but the Herons scored the game-winning goal with 33 seconds remaining in a 2-1 win over the Bombers in the first-ever night game contested at Higgins Stadium. Ithaca begins conference play Saturday at Nazareth in a 1 p.m. start.

The Bombers took the lead on a goal by sophomore forward Lindsay Flanagan (Cicero-North Syracuse/Cicero) early in the second half. It was Flanagan's first goal of the season and the first of her collegiate career. She converted a cross-crease pass from senior forward Heather Kozimor (Hackettstown/Vienna, N.J.) with 32:55 remaining in the second half.

William Smith answered with the game-tying goal in the 54th minute, and then scored the game-winner off a penalty corner in the final minute of the second half.

Ithaca junior goalkeeper Kelly Singleton (Irondequoit/Rochester) made 12 saves in the game, and the Bombers held the Herons to their lowest goal-scoring total of the year with just two goals. William Smith entered the game averaging 4.5 goals per game, which ranked 11th in the nation.

Ithaca was seeking its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since a 2-1 win over William Smith in October 2007.
