Rutgers-Newark Box Score | Oneonta Box Score

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca volleyball team (2-4) picked up a pair of victories, sweeping both Rutgers-Newark (2-4) and Oneonta (1-5) to open the Bomber Invitational at Ben Light Gymnasium on Friday evening. The Bombers will now advance to the championship round on Saturday.

A quick 25-16, 25-13, 25-17 match over the Scarlet Raiders proved to be the Bombers first victory of the 2010 campaign. Freshman Justine Duryea (Cornwall Central/Cornwall-on-Hudson) and junior Karin Edsall (Cornwall Central/Cornwall) each tallied seven kills to lead the way for Ithaca, while sophomore Marissa Woodcome (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford) notched a powerful 21 assists. Senior Taylor Horton (Lakeridge/Lake Oswego, Ore.) dug out 19 times while senior Tina Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart/Altadena, Calif.) was also found in double-digits with 10.

Junior Kate Thoene (Vorhees/High Bridge, N.J.) stood strong on defense recording a pair of solo blocks while assisting on an additional two. Duryea and Edsall also notched solo blocks during the contest.

In the second match of the evening, Ithaca outlasted Oneonta to win 25-22, 25-17, 25-22. The second game was highlighted by a strong run sparked by Orlandini's serve.

After a dismal 1-6 start, Ithaca knotted the game at eight and welcomed Orlandini back to the court to serve. She helped boost the Bombers into a 15-8 lead and the squad held off the Red Dragons for the 25-17 victory.

In game three Oneonta came-from-behind to tie the score at 22 before a duo of Horton aces would finalize all scoring and hoist the Bombers to the championship round of action.

Horton served four aces on the night and Duryea added three. Sophomore Stephanie Lavallato (Hunterdon Central/Flemington, N.J.) led the way for the Bombers with a double-double 14 kill, 13 dig performance. Horton and Orlandini had 14 and 11 digs, respectively.

Woodcome posted 28 assists for the Ithaca offense, while Thoene again proved aggressive on defense as she had three solo blocks and one block assist.

On Saturday Ithaca will take on Widener at 11 a.m. before facing Baptist Bible at 3:30 p.m.
