Salisbury, Md.--The baseball team, down 7-5 to sixth-ranked Salisbury (16-3) in the ninth inning, loaded the bases with one out in the final frame but was able to score just once en route to a one-run loss Sunday afternoon. Three players had multi-hit games for Ithaca (2-9), including junior second baseman Jarrod Surine (Trumansburg/Trumansburg) who picked up a career-high three.
After the Bombers lined out to open the ninth, junior Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) reached base on an infield error. Classmate David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington) then drew a walk and a Seagull error on a ball hit by freshman Nick Carlson (Canandaigua Academy/Canandaigua) loaded the bases.
Senior #T.J. Abone# (Rome Free Academy/Rome) hit into a fielder's choice to score Wolf and move Ahonen--representing the tying run--to third. Salisbury got another infield groundout to end the inning and pick up the victory.
The Bombers had taken the early lead in the game, scoring the game's first run in the second and adding four more in the third. In the third, junior Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich, R.I.) and Wolf picked up back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. A flyout and a passed ball moved the two into scoring position. Freshman Ian Gaule (Columbia/East Greenbush) drove in Streich on a single, and a double from Abone and an outfield error allowed Wolf and Gaule to score. Freshman Matt Keller (Pelham/Pelham) drove in Ithaca's fourth run of the frame on a single to left field.
Salisbury took the lead by scoring twice in the third, four times in the fourth and once in the sixth.
Wolf and Gaule both had two hits for the Bombers. On the mound, sophomore Tucker Healy (Needham/Needham, Mass.) threw the final 4.1 innings of the game for Ithaca. He allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out a career-high seven batters.
Ithaca plays at 17th-ranked Cortland on Wednesday.
