Baseball Splits Doubleheader at St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y.- The Ithaca College baseball team split a doubleheader against the St. Lawrence University Saints on Saturday afternoon. Ithaca took game one 9-4, and lost game two 8-7. The Bombers are now 16-12 on the season.

Game One: Ithaca 9, St. Lawrence 4

In the second inning the Bombers got into some trouble as Jack Picozzi faced a bases loaded jam with two outs. However, he was able to induce a groundout to first base, keeping the game scoreless. Then in the top of the third, the Bombers were able to strike first, with two singles from Nate Rodriguez and Sheldon Jay Walker III to bring home the first run of the game with two outs. Ithaca brought home their second run of the inning with Isaiah Smith doubling down the right field line to make it 2-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Saints were able to string together three, two-out singles to cut the lead in half.

Lucas Orlovitz led off the top of the fourth inning and reached first base after getting hit by a pitch. Camden Laney then singled to left field, winning an eight pitch at bat. Matt Curtis followed with a groundout out to advance the runners, with Rodriguez loading the bases, after being intentionally walked. Ethan Daddabbo brought home another run with a double down the right field line, but the inning ended as a runner was thrown out at home.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Bombers got two runners on with only one out as Zack Sperger and Isaiah Smith both reached-on fielding errors. Ethan Fantel then took advantage with a single into right field on the first pitch of the at-bat to make it 4-1. In the sixth, Ithaca tacked on another run as Laney struck a double, before being brought home by a base hit from Rodriguez.

In the top of the eighth frame, the Bombers continued to add on to their lead. They started off the inning with three straight singles from Orlovitz, Laney, and Curtis to bring home a run. Daddabbo then capped off the inning with his second double of the game down the right field line to make it 7-1.

Ithaca extended their lead even further in the ninth inning with Smith and Fantel striking back-to-back doubles to make it 8-1. Orlovitz then put runners at the corners with a base hit. Colin Dunn followed, coming into the game to pinch hit; he knocked in another run with a double to left field. In the bottom of the ninth, the Saints scored three unearned runs with Eoin Morrissey hitting a home run to right field to cut Ithaca's lead to 9-4, and close out game one of the doubleheader.

In the Bombers win they had nine separate players record hits, while pitchers Jack Picozzi and Richard Zangara combined to allow one earned run over nine innings.

Game Two: St. Lawrence 8, Ithaca 7

In the first inning of game two of the doubleheader, the Bombers started off the game by loading the bases with Sheldon Jay Walker III getting hit by a pitch, followed by back-to-back walks from Isaiah Smith and Ethan Fantel. Lucas Orlovitz drove in the first run of the game, grounding into a fielder's choice. A wild pitch then scored a second run, moving Orlovitz over to third before the Bombers loaded the bases with another hit batter and a walk. Ethan Daddabbo then brought home the third run for the Bombers with a sacrifice fly. However, in the bottom of the frame the Saints rallied back, taking advantage of a fielding error allowing them to score three runs, two of which were unearned.

Then after two scoreless innings from both sides, Ithaca struck again. Jake Alfano started the fourth inning off with a base hit, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Zack Sperger followed with a walk, and both runners were moved into scoring position by a sacrifice bunt from Walker, allowing Anthony Mestre to bring home a run with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the frame, the Saints took the lead after getting four consecutive base hits to make it 5-4. Reed Bailey then worked his way out of the inning, stranding two runners, inducing a pop up and lineout to end the inning.

In the top of the sixth, the Bombers retook the lead from St. Lawrence. A double and a single set runners at the corners with one out, and a wild pitch brought home a run, and moved the other runner over to second. Mestre then gave the Bombers the lead with a single into center field to make it 6-5. However, the Saints tied it back-up in the seventh inning with a double, fielder's choice to advance the runner, and a sacrifice fly to score the run.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Bombers got back-to-back walks to lead off the inning from Sperger and Alfano. An error on a pickoff attempt put runners at the corners, allowing Mestre to drive in another run with a base hit into left field, breaking the 6-6 tie. In the bottom half of the inning, with two outs, the Saints got a base hit driving in two more unearned runs to lift them to an 8-7 win.

The Bombers will be in action again at home at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday against Alfred State College in a non-conference matchup.
