Baseball Loses Series Opener to Skidmore, 10-7

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team squared off against Skidmore College in the first of three games in the Liberty League series at Booth Field on the campus of Cornell University on Friday and IC fell to the Thoroughbreds, 10-7. Ithaca is now 12-10 on the season.

Skidmore put a run on the board in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 advantage as a leadoff double scored after a passed back and single to centerfield before an out was recorded. The Thoroughbreds then added another run with two outs on a double down the left field line.

The Skidmore lead extended to 3-0 in the top of the second on a two-out triple off the right field wall and then the next batter flared a single out to left-center to make it a 4-0 game. Another run crossed the plate following an infield base hit and a single through the left side for a 5-0 difference.

After a scoreless third inning, the Thoroughbreds added another run on an error.

The Bombers finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a no-doubt two-run home run to straightaway center field off the bat of Anthony Mestre with Zack Sperger on base. IC tacked two more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth on another two-run homer, this time from Matt Curtis to left field after Lucas Orlovitz reached on a hit by pitch.

Skidmore got a run back in the seventh on a leadoff solo home run down the left field line, and with two outs, the Thoroughbreds jacked a two-run shot to right-center to make it 9-4.

Ithaca answered with a run in the seventh as Isaiah Smith singled home Orlovitz for a 9-5 score. The Bombers loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth and cashed in as Orlovitz drove in a pair with a base hit up the middle to make it a 10-7 ballgame.

Ithaca will be in action again tomorrow, completing the series against Skidmore College in a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. at Booth Field.
