Bombers Fall in Four to Cortland, 3-1

Box Score

Cortland, N.Y. – The Ithaca (10-8) volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16) match to local foe Cortland in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

Despite the four-set match being knotted on 20 occasions, Cortland (18-4) ruled the match and held a steady advantage throughout its three victorious sets. The Bombers looked strong in the third stanza posting 15 kills and three errors on 40 attempts, but it was not enough to hold off the Red Dragons.

In the first set, Cortland jumped out to a commanding 9-2 lead before the Bombers brought the game within four, 13-9. Cortland again extended their lead before Ithaca closed in on it, but the host squad outscored the Bombers, 6-2, down the stretch to put them a game up.

The second frame mirrored much of the first as Ithaca played catch-up after a 14-14 tie turned to an 18-14 Cortland advantage. The Bombers pieced together a 5-1 run to again bring the game to a stalemate, but the Red Dragons secured a two-set lead on another 6-2 run reaching a 25-21 verdict.

The third set proved to be Ithaca's strongest as it jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. Tied on nine occasions, including a 21-21 stalemate, the Bombers claimed the final run of the third set, 4-2, to take the game and hope to push the match to five.

But the fourth set finalized all scoring. The set was tied early, 3-3, but Cortland ran away with the lead, 20-10, and took the match with a 25-16 fourth-set victory.

Junior Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) led the Bombers with 10 kills, while junior Kate Thoene (Voorhees/High Bridge, N.J.) added nine on a .300 hitting percentage. Behind their efforts was setter and sophomore Marissa Woodcome (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford) tallying 19 assists on the night and adding 10 digs. Senior Taylor Horton (Lakeridge/Lake Oswego, Ore.) led Ithaca with 20 digs and senior Tina Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy/Altadena, Calif.) added 12. Thone also led the squad with 5 block assists and Woodcome took the serving honors having recorded four aces.

The Bomber will next travel to the Interleague Challenge hosted by Union to face Skidmore and Potsdam on Friday, Oct. 8 and Oneonta and Union on Saturday, Oct. 9.
