Pine Valley, N.Y. - The Ithaca field hockey team (5-6, 2-2 Empire 8) scored a goal in the second minute of the game and added an insurance tally late in the second half in a 2-0 victory at Elmira (1-11, 0-4 Empire 8) Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore midfielder
Tracy Rivas (East Meadow/East Meadow) opened the scoring for the Bombers after just a minute and a half had elapsed in the game, converting a pass from senior midfielder
Katherine Brown (Akron/Akron). It was the third goal in the last two games for
Rivas, who now leads Ithaca in goals (five) and points (10).
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kelly Singleton (Irondequoit/Rochester) played the first half and made nine saves. She earned her fifth victory of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper
Samantha Grassi (Rondout Valley/Kerhonkson) played the second half and made two saves. The Bombers held a 20-14 advantage in shots and 14-10 advantage in penalty corners.
Ithaca sealed the victory with a goal in the 64th minute as freshman midfielder
Emily Lash (Oley Valley/Oley, Pa.) scored on an assist from senior midfielder
Laura Murphy (Orchard Park/Orchard Park). It was the first career goal for
Lash, and
Murphy's first point of the season.
Ithaca hosts Wooster (Ohio) Monday at 3 p.m. in a non-league game. It will be the first game ever played at Ithaca's new turf field, Higgins Field.
