Canton, N.Y. -- Senior quarterback Brian Grastorf (Niskayuna/Rexford) had a hand in five touchdowns as the #10 Bombers opened their season with a 45-0 win at St. Lawrence. Grastorf threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more and the defense held to 79 yards of total offense and just two first downs.
Ithaca turned three Saint turnovers in the first 15 minutes into points en route to a 24-0 first-quarter lead.
St. Lawrence lost possession after their firt play from scrimmage when sophomore cornerback Spence White (Sleepy Hollow/Yonkers) forced a fumble that was recovered by senior free safety Chad Herring (Unatego/Unadilla). Eight plays later, sophomore Andrew Rogowski (Canisius/East Amherst) kicked a career-long 33-yard field goal. Interceptions by Herring and linebacker Matt Scalice (North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda) set up touchdown runs of six yards by Grastorf and three yards by junior running back Dan Ruggiero (Pen Argyl/Pen Argyl, Pa.).
Grastorf had capped the Bombers' opening drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wideout Matt Hannon (Minisink Valley/Middletown). The score came on the first reception of Hannon's career.
In the second half, Grastorf scored on a one-yard run, threw a four-yard scoring pass to Ruggiero and closed the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Eric Breton (Shaker/Latham). Breton's score was the first of his career.
Grastorf finished with career-best totals of 285 passing yards and 21 completions (in 32 tries). He became the 22nd Bomber to pass for 1,000 career yards and raised his career total to 1,240 yards, good for 18th on the program's all-time list.
Ruggiero ran for a game-high 75 yards and became the first Bomber to score a rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game since Dan Ross against Brockport in 2007.
Three Bomber receivers posted career-best totals: junior wideout Thomas Vossler (Loon Lake/Loon Lake) caught five passes -- all in the first half -- for a personal-best 100 yards; junior fullback Lance Baumgartner (Walkill Valley/Hamburg, N.J.) caught five passes and junior wide receiver Dan Ruffrage (Notre Dame/Utica) made four catches.
The Bomber defense allowed just 34 rushing yards on 24 attempts. Over the last three quarters, the Saints ran for just five yards and didn't pick up a first down in 31 plays. Scalice led Ithaca with seven tackles and his first career interception. A graduate student who received a medical hardship waiver after playing in just three games as a freshman, he became the first Bomber to start a game in five different seasons. His seven tackles raised his career total to 274, which moves him into 10th on the school's all-time list.
Sophomore linebacker Ryan Clarke (Archbishop Spaulding/West Friendship, Md.) added seven tackles. Junior defensive end Sean Gil (Sachem North/Holbrook) collected two tackles for loss, including his first career sack. He also recovered a fumble. Freshman defensive end #Owen Kugler# (Highland Park/Highland PArk, Ill.) added a sack and a fumble recovery as well.
Rogowski matched a career high with nine points. With 74 points in just 12 games, he already ranks sixth in career scoring among Bomber kickers.
