Cortland, N.Y.—The #7 Ithaca wrestling team beat #23 Cortland 25-9 Wednesday night. This is the first victory over Cortland since 2004.
The Bombers finish the season with a 14-1 record in dual meets, which is the second-best finish in school history. The 1987-88 Bombers went 15-0 in dual meets.
Freshman Seth Ecker (Pottstown/Pottstown, Pa.) won the opening bout at 125 pounds 15-5, earning a major decision. Ecker is ranked eighth nationally at 125 pounds. Junior Chad Winowich (Abington heights/Clarks Summit, Pa.) won the 133 pound bout by decision.
Senior John Paxos (Roxbury/Succasuna, N.J.), ranked eighth nationally at 141 pounds, won his bout by decision.
At 157, junior Willie Horwath (Liberty/Bethlehem, Pa.) won by decision. Horwath is ranked eighth nationally at 157 pounds. Sophomore David Priest (Wyomissing/Douglassville, Pa.), ranked sixth nationally at 174, also won by decision. Horwath and Priest both finished the dual-meet season undefeated. Only 20 other Bombers have posted undefeated dual-meet seasons in school history. Horwath finished with a 15-0 record, second-best in Bomber history. Ryan Ciotoli, now an assistant coach with Ithaca, was the last wrestler to finish with an undefeated record, going 17-0 in 2000-01. Priest won 10 dual-meet matches.
Senior Scott Edwards (Liberty/Bethlehem, Pa.) scored a victory by decision in the 165 pound match. Freshman Chris Carabello (Governor Mifflin/Shillington, Pa.) scored the only pin of the night. Carabello scored the fall with 45 seconds left in the 197 pound bout.
The ECWC Championship will be hosted by Oswego and begin February 21.
