ITHACA – The Bomber volleyball team dropped its second match of the day on Saturday afternoon in five sets by scores of 24-26, 27-25, 25-13, 22-25, 17-15 to New York University in the third-place match at the 2008 Bomber Invitational. With the loss, Ithaca falls to 5-3 on the year while NYU is 6-2 on the season.
Ithaca finished in fourth place in the tournament and junior setter
Corinna Doctor (Skaneateles/Skaneatles) and sophomore
Tina Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart/Altadena, Calif.) were named to the all-tournament team.
The Bombers won a close first set as neither team led by more than four points in the contest. Ithaca won the last two points on an attack error from NYU and a kill by
Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge).
After the Violets won the next two sets, Ithaca won the fourth set 25-22 and built an early 10-3 lead on the way.
Jen Heberton (Darien/Darien, Conn.) had five kills in the set and
Doctor had seven assists in the set.
NYU won a close fifth set that included eight ties.
Ithaca will host Rochester on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Ben Light Gymnasium.
