Big First Half Leads Hartwick Past Bombers

Goalkeeper Courtney Dowell saw her first action of the season and didn't allow a goal.
Oneonta, N.Y. – Four first-half goals for the host Hartwick Hawks (3-5, 1-0 Empire 8) led to a 4-1 win over Ithaca (2-5, 0-2 Empire 8) in Empire 8 field hockey action Saturday. Senior Ally Swink (Downingtown East/Downingtown, Pa.) scored her second goal of the season for the Bombers.

Hartwick opened the scoring six minutes into the game before Swink tied the score on a long shot from just inside the circle that found the back of the net. Swink's goal was answered by three-straight tallies from the Hawks. All of the game's scoring took place in the first half.

Ithaca outshot Hartwick 6-3 in the second half, and the Bombers held a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners in the game.

Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Welsh (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia) started for Ithaca and made four saves. Junior Courtney Dowell (Massapequa/Massapequa) played the last 36 minutes of the game and made one save without allowing a goal.

The Bombers return home to Yavits Field Wednesday at 4 p.m. when they host Oneonta.
