Ithaca Loses Empire 8 Opener

Mia Muzio scored her second career goal.
ITHACA, N.Y. – Washington & Jefferson (5-1, 1-0 Empire 8) defeated the Ithaca (2-4, 0-1 Empire 8) field hockey team 4-1 Saturday at Yavits Field in Ithaca, ending a seven-game home winning streak for the Bombers.

Ithaca scored at the end of the first half off a penalty corner. Senior back Marisa Frank (Bow/Bow, N.H.) played the ball to sophomore Mia Muzio (Rockport/Rockport, Mass.) on the left side of the circle. Muzio's long shot to the far corner put the Bombers on the board. Ithaca trailed 2-1 at halftime.

The Bombers' best scoring chance of the second half came when Ithaca was awarded a penalty stroke. Junior midfielder Krista Fieselmann (Bridgewater-Raritan/Bridgewater, N.J.) scooped the shot toward the top-right corner of the cage, but the Washington & Jefferson goalkeeper stopped the shot with her left hand.

Ithaca outshot Washington & Jefferson 13-8 and held a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners. Bomber junior goalkeeper Chelsea Welsh (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia) made three saves.

Ithaca returns to action Saturday at Hartwick at 1 p.m.
