Men's Basketball Rallies to Knock Off Trinity at Tournament

Brendan Rogers scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the second half.

Rochester, N.Y.—Ithaca (3-0) opened the Chuck Resler Tournament—hosted by Rochester—with a comeback 80-75 win over Trinity (Conn.) (0-2). Seniors Sean Burton (Notre Dame/Yorkville) and Brendan Rogers (Liverpool/Liverpool) combined for 25 second-half points to help erase a seven-point deficit. The Bantams led by as many as 10 points in the second half. The 3-0 start is the first for the Bombers in 22 years, they started the 1986-87 season 4-0.

The Bombers trailed as late as 7:45 to play, down by one at 66-65. A three-point field goal from Rogers gave Ithaca a two-point lead that they would not relinquish. The Bombers would hold a lead between two and four points until a Trinity basket with 1:15 to play again cut the lead to one at 76-75. The Bantams would not score again, however, and Burton hit a jumper and a pair of free-throws to seal the Ithaca win.

Trinity had had a rally of its own, recovering from 16 straight Ithaca points that changed a 57-47 Bantam lead to a 63-57 deficit. Ithaca got points from seven different players and made six of seven free throw attempts to rally from the 10 point hole, their largest of the game.

In the first half, Ithaca took its first lead of the day at 23-22 on a layup from sophomore guard Chris Cruz (West Genesee/Camillus). Senior center Jeff Bostic (Geneva/Rochester) scored Ithaca's next ten points en route to a 35-35 tie with just under four minutes to play. With 16 points and 11 rebounds, Bostic picked up his second straight double-double.

Ithaca would again tie the score, at 37-37, on a pair of made free throws from graduate Scott Ruffrage (Utica Notre Dame/Whitesboro) before allowing seven straight Bantam points in the final two minutes of the half.

Rogers led the Bombers with 19 points, shooting .615 (8-13) from the floor. Burton scored 16 points with seven assists. With 1,195 career points Burton is now Ithaca's seventh leading scorer. He also ranks fourth with 361 assists.

The Bombers will face the winner of Friday's game between host Rochester and Pitt-Bradford. The championship game will be played Saturday at 8 p.m.
