Bombers Rally Past Cortland For Women's Basketball Win

Katherine Bixby led the Bombers to their first win

Cortland, N.Y. -- Junior guard Katherine Bixby (Germantown Friends/Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 18 of her game-high 25 points in the second half as the women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat previously unbeaten Cortland, 56-51.

Bixby made five-of-10 three-pointers (four of six in the second half) and also recorded five rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Lindsay Brown (Immaculate/Danbury, Conn.) made four three-pointers and finished with 12 points and six rebounds and Elissa Klie (Ramapo/Wyckoff, N.J.) added eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists and five steals.

Cortland took its largest lead at 28-18 on two free throws with 2:51 left in the first half. Ithaca opened the second half on a 9-0 run, led by four points from Tracy Bradley (Lewiston/Brunswick, Maine) and was within 28-27 with 16:09 left.

The Bombers led 36-31 with 13:54 left on a Brown three-pointer, but six straight points gave the Red Dragons the lead back at 37-36 with 11:55 remaining.

Cortland took its final lead of the night at 50-49 on a McLaughlin jumper with 4:50 on the clock. Ithaca turned the ball over on its next three possessions, but the Red Dragons were unable to capitalize. The Bombers missed a free throw with 2:30 left, but Bradley grabbed the offensive rebound and Klie fed Brown for a go-ahead three-pointer with 2:23 left and the Bombers led 52-50.

Cortland missed its next three shots and Bixby sank two free throws with 49 seconds left to push the lead to 54-50. A foul shot with 29 seconds to go pulled Cortland within three, but Bixby iced the game with two free throws with 22 seconds left.
