Men's Basetball Team Hammers Hobart 118-81

Sean Burton has a school-record 193 three-pointers in his career.

ITHACA, N.Y.—Ithaca (2-0) scored 65 second-half points to dismantle visiting Hobart (0-2) 118-81 in the Bombers' home opener Tuesday night. Senior guard Sean Burton (Notre Dame/Yorkville) set a Bomber record with his 193rd career three-point field goal. Burton also scored his 1,179 career point, putting him 10th in Ithaca history. The Bomber point total was the most since they scored a school-record 123 on Feb 6, 1968.

Up 53-46 at the start of the second half, the Bombers got three three-point field goals—two from senior Sean Leahy (West Genesee/Syracuse) and one from sophomore Chris Cruz (West Genesee/Camillus)—to spark a 15-7 run that put the game out of reach for the Statesmen. The Bombers never trailed by fewer than 15 points for the remainder of the contest, and saw their lead swell to as many as 42 points at 118-76.

Ithaca got runs of 10 and nine unanswered points in the second half. They shot .632 from the floor and held Hobart to .333 shooting.

Ithaca never trailed in the game after a layup from Cruz put the Bombers up 4-2 less than one minute into play. Seven straight points Burton helped extend the Ithaca lead to 11 points. Burton scored 23 of his 28 points in the opening half. Cruz picked up 11 of his 14 points in the first.

The Bombers held a 14 point lead with four minutes to play in the half, but allowed three Statesman baskets in the final two minutes to cut the lead to seven entering halftime.

Burton had three three-point field-goals on the night, breaking the record of 191 previously held by Ryan Bamford. He needs just one point to tie Jim Bellis for ninth on the Bombers career scoring list.

Senior center Jeff Bostic (Geneva/Rochester) picked up his 21st career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also added a pair of blocks. Leahy made five of his 10 shots—including both three-pointers—to add 14 points to the Ithaca effort.

The Bombers have not started a season 2-0 since the 2001-02 season -- the last time they qualified for the NCAA playoffs.

Ithaca will compete in the Chuck Resler hosted by the University of Rochester. The Bombers' first game is against Trinity (Conn.) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
