Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Oneonta

Nick Sottung struck out four in seven innings to improve to 4-1

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The baseball team (10-7) defeated Oneonta in the first game of the doubleheader 4-1, but dropped the second 6-3 in eight innings. Junior Nick Sottung (Pulaski/Pulaski) improved to 4-1 on the mound and is only one win away from becoming the 13th Bomber in school history to record 20 career wins.

Senior first baseman Jason Friedman (Whitney Young/Chicago, Ill.) paced the Bombers by going 3-for-6 with two RBIs and one run scored on the day. Senior outfielder Jeremy Peters (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica) went 3-for-7 with one RBI and two runs scored and junior outfielder Eric Ferguson (Columbia/East Greenbush) went 2-for-6 with a team-high four RBIs.

In the first outing, the Bombers scored all their runs in the third inning. Peters, who went 2-for-3 in the game, singled to leftfield and then took second base two batters later on a passed ball. Junior designated hitter Shane Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) walked and Ferguson doubled down the rightfield line to score both players. Friedman capped the rally by hitting a two-run homerun -- his first homerun as a Bomber.

Sottung pitched all seven innings, striking out four batters and allowing three hits.

In game two, the Bombers trailed 1-0 after four innings. In the fifth with sophomore third baseman Dylan Perez (Conval Regional [Conn.]/Peterborough, N.H.) on third, Peters singled to leftfield to score Perez. Peters advanced to second on a single by junior designated hitter Rob Raux (Ilion/Frankfort), who went 3-for-4 in the game. Ferguson, who is .452 with runner in scoring position, singled to centerfield to score Peters.

The Red Dragons scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Raux singled to advance sophomore Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairport/Fairport) to third. Ferguson grounded to third base, but reached first before Oneonta could turn two. Bednarcyk scored to tie the game.

Oneonta scored three runs in the eight to improve to 15-4.
