No. 23 Field Hockey Opens Up Liberty League Play By Shutting Out Union

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College field hockey team opened up Liberty League play with a win against the Union Garnet Chargers on Saturday, Sept. 26. Ithaca College goalkeeper Maeve Clark recorded her fourth shutout of the year pushing the Bombers to a 2-0 win.

IC's offense would start off hot with a penalty corner in the first minute of play. The best chance it would get from the corner would be a shot wide from Sadie Ruiz.

The Garnet Chargers would also take a corner two minutes later, forcing the Bombers' goalkeeper to make a large save early on. Clark would keep the ball out of the cage by kicking it away and leaving the Bombers unscathed.

The rest of the first half was deadlocked between the 25's and the occasional fast break.

The Bombers would finish the first half with more shots but that would be one of the only categories that IC would lead Union, other than that all the other stats were tied heading into the second half.

The Bombers flew out of the intermission red-hot. Just a minute into the third, Audrey McMahon would score her fifth goal of the season off of a IC penalty corner. McMahon would deflect the ball down into the cage then give a little shove to get the Bombers on the board.

Union wouldn't go down easy, as it would obtain a penalty corner nine minutes later. This corner was easily Union's most dangerous chance of the game.

Garnet Chargers' Rowan Dapson would find the ball all alone on the near side of the shooting circle. She would fire it into what seemingly was an empty cage, but defender Margaret Lansley would get over just in time to save the first chance.

The play wouldn't end there. Dapson would reclaim the ball and look to fire it on the far side. But Clark stood tall and would clear it giving IC a much-needed reset.

The fourth quarter would be all Ithaca. Posting four shots and three corners. The third corner would be the charm for the Bombers as they would get on the board once again.

Later, in the 56th minute Bombers' Amelia MacDonald would set up Mia Woodard. Woodard would show off her hand-eye coordination with this goal deflecting it down then lifting it ahead for the game winner.

The Bombers will travel to Albany N.Y. on Tuesday, Sept. 29 to take on Russell Sage College at 6 P.M.
