CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team split a Liberty League doubleheader on Sunday against Clarkson at the Gutchess Sports Complex as the Bombers dropped the opener, 11-1, but rebounded to take the nightcap, 14-3, in seven innings. Ithaca is now 10-6 on the season and 3-2 in the league.
GAME ONE: CLARKSON 11, ITHACA 1
Errors plagued Ithaca early in the contest as the mishaps led to three unearned runs in the second inning. Clarkson then plated runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 5-0 lead before IC could get any offense going.
The Bombers pushed their lone run across the plate in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded single by
Owen Callahan to bring in
Camden Laney. IC was unable to score another run as the next three batters struck out.
Clarkson scored once more in the sixth and put the game away in the ninth with five more runs.
Liam Tiernan went 3-for-5 in the contest, while
Matt Curtis was 2-for-5.
Jack Picozzi took the loss in 4.0 innings as he allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Cole Stefanelli and
Ben Ruth tossed scoreless innings of relief.
GAME TWO: ITHACA 14, CLARKSON 3 (7 INNINGS)
The Bombers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run single from
Ethan Fantel that brought home Curtis and
Sheldon Jay Walker III. After Clarkson tied the game in the top half of the second, Ithaca scored three more times to build a 5-2 advantage behind an RBI base hit from Walker to plate Ethan Dabbabbo and a two-run home run from Curtis.
The Golden Knights scored once more in the third inning for a 5-3 difference, but Ithaca blew the game open with three runs in the fourth, five more in the fifth and the final run in the sixth.
In the three-run fourth, Fantel drilled a two-run homer with Curtis on base and
Isaiah Smith drove home Laney on a base hit later in the inning. Walker drove in the initial run in the fifth on a single that plated two runs thanks to an error and then a sacrifice fly from Curtis pushed another run across. A wild pitch allowed Fantel to score and the inning was capped off with a Smith RBI single to left that scored Laney.
A sacrifice fly from
Merrick Sullivan in the sixth inning allowed Daddabbo to score the final run of the contest.
Reed Bailey tossed a complete game with six strikeouts to no walks and allowed three runs on six hits.
The series concludes tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Gutchess.
