CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team concluded its three-game series with Clarkson at the Gutchess Sports Complex on Monday afternoon with a high-scoring 17-10 victory. Ithaca is now 11-6 on the season and 4-2 in the Liberty League after taking two-of-three from the Golden Knights.
IC took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as
Anthony Mestre started things off with a solo home run and then
Matt Curtis followed with an RBI double to bring home
Ethan Fantel.
Clarkson then plated five runs in the top of the third to go ahead, 5-2, but the Bombers were able to get a run back in the bottom half of the inning on an opposite field home run from Fantel.
The Bombers took control of the game over the fourth and fifth innings with 10 total runs to flip a 5-3 deficit into a 13-5 lead. IC plated six runs in the fourth, which started with a bases loaded walk to
Sheldon Jay Walker III with
Ethan Daddabbo ninety feet away. Fantel then drove in
Zack Sperger with a sacrifice fly and
Camden Laney followed with a two-run double and Curtis capped off the inning with a two-run homer to center.
In the fifth, Mestre drove in Sperger and Daddabbo with a single to make it 11-5 and then Fantel sent a double off the right-center wall to push home Mestre and
Liam Tiernan.
Clarkson responded with two runs in the sixth, but IC answered with an RBI base hit from Tiernan to bring home Sperger to double up the score at 14-7.
The Golden Knights continued to battle back to make it a 14-10 contest in the seventh with three more runs, but IC put the game away in the bottom of the seventh with a sac fly from Fantel and a two-run double off the bat of Daddabbo for the final runs of the game.
Ithaca's 2-through-5 hitters went 10-for-18 with 13 RBI and eight runs scored.
Danny Drotos earned the win in 2.1 innings of relief, while
Richard Zangara went 3.2 innings in a starting role.
Sean Minnick also tossed an inning out of the bullpen and
Luke Zelinko closed out the game with four strikeouts over the final two innings.
Ithaca will return to the diamond this weekend with a three-game series against RIT.
