MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ithaca College baseball team opened its Spring Break trip in South Carolina on Saturday with a doubleheader split against Mary Washington. Ithaca won the opener, 7-1, while the Eagles took the night cap, 4-2. IC is now 5-3 on the season.
GAME ONE: ITHACA 7, MARY WASHINGTION 1
Ithaca took the lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI double from
Matt Curtis that plated
Ethan Fantel and the score remained 1-0 until
Owen Callahan scored on a double play in the top of the fifth to make it 2-0.
Camden Laney then drove in
Sheldon Jay Walker III on a base hit later in the inning for a 3-0 lead.
IC blew the game open in the seventh with four more runs to build a 7-0 advantage. Fantel started the rally with a two-run base hit as Walker and
Zachary Barron scored and then
Isaiah Smith drew a bases loaded walk to bring home Fantel. The final run crossed the plate on a hit by pitch to
Lucas Orlovitz that pushed in
Colin Dunn.
Jack Picozzi was dominant in his seven-inning complete game as he struck out two batters and allowed just four hits and one run, which scored in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch.
Fantel and Laney each went 2-for-4 in the contest to lead the offense.
GAME TWO: MARY WASHINGTION 4, ITHACA 2
Just like Game 1, Ithaca took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Fantel singled in Walker for an unearned run.
Mary Washington tied the contest at 1-1 in the second on an attempted double steal, but the Bombers went back ahead, 2-1, on a RBI single by Laney to score Walker in the third.
The Eagles knotted things back up at 2-2 in the fourth on a single up the middle and put the game away in the seventh with two more runs on a bases loaded walk and wild pitch for the 4-2 final.
Walker was 2-for-3 at the plate as the top bat in the lineup.
Reed Bailey tossed 5.0 innings and allowed eight hits and two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts.
Luke Zelinko took the loss in 2.0 innings of relief as he fanned three batters.
Ithaca is back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday against TCNJ.
