Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - The Ithaca College baseball team defeated the Wilkes University Colonels 11-6 on Tuesday night, winning their third straight game, and improving their record to 4-2 on the season.
In the top of the first inning, the Bombers got the first two runners on with
Sheldon Jay Walker III and
Anthony Mestre reaching base to lead off the game. Walker then advanced to third before Mestre got caught stealing second; however, the steal attempt allowed Walker to safely reach home, scoring the first run of the game. The Colonels would take the lead in the bottom of the frame, as the Bombers hit the first batter, then gave up a walk, and a single. A fielding error on the play allowed two unearned runs to score, giving the Colonels a 2-1 lead.
In the second frame,
Lucas Orlovitz led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, and advanced to second on a single by
Nolan Kelleher. Then with two outs,
Zachary Barron displayed some clutch hitting when he singled up the middle of the field to bring home Orlovitz, knotting up the game at two.
In the bottom of the third, the Colonels got another run on the board playing small ball. Nathan Loch led off the inning with a hit, stole second, and finally came home when Jack Mathis bunted for a hit that forced a throwing error to bring Loch home.
Ithaca then struck back in the fifth inning, when Kelleher led off the inning with a triple, followed by a one-out single from Barron. In the bottom of the frame, the Colonels led off the inning with Loch getting hit by a pitch, stealing second, and advancing to third on the throw. He then came home after another walk and stolen base attempt which led to a wide throw bringing in a run. The Bombers gave up one more hit, making it 5-3 in favor of the Colonels.
The Bombers started to rally again in the sixth inning, loading the bases with
Ethan Fantel,
Matt Curtis, and
Isaiah Smith all reaching base safely with one out. Orlovitz then brought home the first run of the inning as he was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Kelleher and
Ethan Daddabbo followed that up with back-to-back singles, bringing in the tying and go-ahead run to lead 7-5. However, in the bottom of the frame, Wilkes University brought home another unearned run to cut the Bomber lead in half.
In the final frame, the Bombers loaded the bases for the second time in the game, as Mestre struck a double, then the Bombers got consecutive four pitch walks from Fantel and Curtis. Ithaca then got their first run of the inning when Smith collected their third straight walk.
