Baseball Splits High-Scoring Doubleheader at Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Ithaca College baseball team traveled down to Maryland for a doubleheader at Washington College and the Bombers played to a split that featured 58 runs and a shortened night cap. Ithaca is now 1-2 on the season.

Game 1: Ithaca 18, Washington 14

The Ithaca College baseball team returned to the field on Friday morning and came away with an offensive outburst, defeating Washington College 18–14 in a back-and-forth contest that featured 31 combined hits and plenty of early scoring.

The Bombers wasted no time getting the offense started in the top of the first inning. Taking advantage of defensive miscues and aggressive baserunning, Ithaca plated five runs to jump out to an early lead. Sophomore first baseman Ethan Fantel launched his first home run of the season during the rally, while Matt Curtis delivered a two-RBI single to help extend the early advantage.

Washington College answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs of its own to even the game after one inning of play. Despite the early push from the Shoremen, Ithaca continued to apply pressure offensively throughout the game.

The Bombers finished the afternoon with 16 hits and seven stolen bases, consistently putting runners in scoring position and putting Washington College's bullpen in trouble. Several Bombers delivered strong performances at the plate.

Fantel led the way with four hits, four RBIs and a home run, while Curtis added two hits and two RBIs. Lucas Orlovitz contributed a pair of hits and two RBI, and Anthony Mestre also drove in two runs as Ithaca's lineup produced throughout the order.

On the mound, Ithaca utilized multiple arms to navigate the high-scoring contest. Ethan Murley started the game for the Bombers and worked three innings, striking out two. The Bombers bullpen helped stabilize things later in the game, with Sean Minnick tossing three innings and allowing just three runs while striking out three to help keep Washington College within reach.

Washington College kept the pressure on offensively as well, finishing the game with 13 hits and six doubles, but Ithaca capitalized on defensive opportunities throughout the afternoon. The Shoremen committed seven errors, which allowed the Bombers to extend innings and add key insurance runs. Despite the back-and-forth nature of the game, Ithaca maintained enough offensive momentum to hold on late, securing the 18–14 victory.

Game 2: Washington 14, Ithaca 12 (5 innings)

The Bombers split the doubleheader with Washington College on Friday afternoon, falling to the Shoremen 14–12 in the second game of the day, which was shortened to five innings, in a back-and-forth offensive battle.

Washington College jumped out to a quick start, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take early control. The Shoremen capitalized on timely hits and aggressive baserunning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Brady Thompson and an RBI single from Ty Everitt.

The Bombers responded in the top of the third inning, cutting into the deficit with four runs. Anthony Mestre drove in Ithaca's first run of the game with an RBI single, and Matt Curtis followed with a three-run home run to left field to bring the Bombers within two.

Washington College answered again in the bottom half of the inning and extended its lead to 13–4 after three innings of play.

Ithaca chipped away at the deficit in the later innings. Anthony Mestre doubled in two runs in the fourth, and Ethan Fantel followed with an RBI single to make it a six-run game. The Bombers continued to rally in the fifth inning when Ben Raspanti launched a two-run home run to left field. Later in the inning, Fantel delivered again with a two-RBI single that brought Ithaca within two runs.

Despite the late push, the Bombers were unable to complete the comeback as Washington College held on for the 14–12 win. Curtis and Fantel each finished with three RBIs to lead Ithaca offensively, while Sheldon Jay Walker III and Mestre both scored multiple runs during the contest.

On the mound, Ryan Kane took the loss for Ithaca after starting the game. The Bombers used multiple pitchers throughout the contest, including Anders Lowkes and Ezra Sadowsky, who combined to help limit further damage after the early scoring surge. Ithaca totaled 10 hits in the game and drew seven walks, but Washington College's early offensive burst proved to be the difference.

The Bombers will look to bounce back tomorrow as they travel to Flemington, N.J. to face Arcadia University in a doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 11 am, followed by game two at 2 pm.
