CANTON, N.Y. - The nationally ranked No. 20 Ithaca College field hockey team advanced to 9-2 and remained undefeated in Liberty League play after taking down the St. Lawrence Saints by a final score of 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 2.
The Bombers started this game a little slow, only tallying five shots in the first quarter whereas the Saints tallied eight. But the Bombers' defense and goalkeeper
Maeve Clark would shine to push the Bombers to be able to compete in the second quarter.
IC would ride the momentum hard in the second, but due to committing too many fouls, with 15, it stalled its offense and led to no real dangerous opportunities.
However, the second half would open on quite a different note with the Bombers offense rolling out quickly over the Saints, with three goals in the half.
The Bombers would gain an opportunity in transition with
Payton Yahner sending a shot to the front of the cage and Saints' goalkeeper Stella Gizzi made the first initial save, kicking the ball out to the near side of the shooting circle. But Bombers striker
Mia Woodard found her way to the front and sent home the rebound to put the Bombers ahead 1-0.
Just three minutes following the initial goal, IC would find themselves with one more chance of a penalty corner.
Brooke Snider sent a shot in from the top of the shooting circle and Abbey Hennessy would deflect the ball up and into the cage for the Bombers second goal of the contest.
St. Lawrence would try and respond, having five total shots in the quarter with only two posing as any real threat, but Clark stood tall and put every opportunity aside to keep the game at 2-0 Bombers entering the fourth.
The final frame would be all offense with the Bombers and Saints exchanging 15 shots. But I would find the back of the cage one more time.
That Bombers goal came off a penalty corner in the 50th minute. Sophomore midfielder
Elizabeth Rumble picked up her first collegiate goal from a deflection on the far side of the shooting circle.
The Bombers kept pressing with other penalty corner opportunities, but nothing would land leaving the final score at 3-0 for the Bombers fourth straight win and its second win in Liberty League play.
IC is back home on Sunday, Oct. 4 against Skidmore at 1 p.m.
