Ithaca Women’s Soccer Posts 1-0 Victory Over Drew University to Cap Off Weekend Back-to-Back

MADISON, N.J. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team returned to its winning ways on Sunday afternoon, defeating Drew University 1-0 in the final match of the Drew Fall Festival. With the win, the Bombers improved to 3-1 on the season and handed the Rangers their first loss, dropping them to 2-1-1.

The game's lone goal came in the opening minutes of the second half, when Ella Shorkey found the top left corner of the net off a well-placed feed from Ava Detorie. The assist was Detorie's second of the season and the 16th of her collegiate career.

Ithaca generated early pressure, earning two corner kicks in the opening minutes, but couldn't convert. In the 11th minute, Kaelyn Fernandez nearly opened the scoring with a powerful shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.

About 20 minutes later, goalkeeper Katrina Varnum took control of the defensive end, making a crucial save on a shot from just outside the box. She followed it up with another key stop on a close-range attempt off a corner kick, and added a third save late in the half on a shot from roughly 18 yards out to keep the game scoreless.

Early in the second half, Shorkey nearly doubled Ithaca's lead with a second goal, but was denied by Drew keeper Hayden Scotti. The Bombers continued to press, with Zara Nourie sending a shot high in the 60th minute, followed by a wide attempt from Devin Sylvia off a corner kick. From that point on, Ithaca controlled the tempo and limited Drew's opportunities, securing the 1-0 victory.

The Bombers finished with seven total shots, including three on goal. Varnum stopped all three shots she faced to earn the clean sheet.

Ithaca returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Nazareth University at Carp Wood Field.
