ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 18 Ithaca College field hockey team controlled play for most of the 60 minutes against visiting Cortland at Higgins Stadium on Wednesday evening, but it was the Red Dragons who came away with a 1-0 victory. Ithaca is now 3-2 on the season, while Cortland is 2-2.
Cortland took a 1-0 lead midway through the second quarter as a ball down the left side moved inside the circle and then was centered about six yards from cage. The ensuing pass from a Dragons forward on the doorstep for a tap in goal from the right side.
Ithaca put together a few scoring chances in the half with three corners, but the Bombers were only able to put one shot on goal, while another rang off a post.
In the second half, IC outshot Cortland, 7-1, and held a 6-2 edge in corners. Similarly to the first half though, Ithaca could not find the back of the net and four shots were on target but saved. Specifically in the fourth quarter, IC produced four corner attempts and had back-to-back shots turned away on one of those chances. The other three corners came up empty as well as no shots were taken over the final three minutes.
Ithaca is back at home on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game against No. 17 Geneseo.
