ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 18 Ithaca College field hockey team got back in the win column with a 2-1 comeback win at Higgins Stadium on Saturday against No. 17 SUNY Geneseo. The Bombers are now 4-2 on the season and hand Geneseo its first loss of the year.
Geneseo quickly jumped ahead of the Bombers with a goal off a corner less than 80 seconds into the game. After the insert, an initial shot was turned away by
Maeve Clark and a follow up one was also saved, but the third attempt found the back of the net.
IC had its first opportunity to tie the game two minutes later, but a shot by
Caroline Folan was saved and the first quarter concluded at 1-0.
The Bombers knotted things up at 1-1 five minutes into the second quarter on a corner chance. The insert from
Brenna Schoenfeld went to
Abby Hennessy, who ripped a shot towards goal and a rushing
Brady Sullivan re-directed the shot for the equalizer.
Clark would keep the contest deadlocked with three more saves over the final six minutes of the half.
Ithaca then took the lead early in the third quarter as
Breeah Shaw poked in a loose ball following a saved shot off the stick of
Eliza Ballaro. The play started on a corner and Ballaro fired a shot from the top of the circle and the ball snuck through the pads of Geneseo's goalie. Shaw was waiting on the goal line to tap it into the goal for the eventual game-winner.
Geneseo managed to only take two shots the rest of the way.
Clark finished the game with six saves to improve to 4-2 on the year.
Ithaca plays two more non-conference games next week against Brockport on Wednesday and New Paltz on Saturday.
