No. 21 Field Hockey Posts Highest Scoring Output in 12 Years in 9-0 Win over Brockport

ITHACA, N.Y. - The nationally ranked No. 21 Ithaca College field hockey team kept their momentum rolling in a defining 9-0 victory over SUNY Brockport on Wednesday evening at Higgins Stadium to improve to 5-2 on the season.

Ithaca's goals came from seven different sources in the victory. Senior Brenna Schoenfeld and sophomore Delaney Szwast were the multi-goal scorers, with Schoenfeld also tacking on a pair of assists and Szwast's goals coming down the stretch of the game off her first two shots of the season. The Bomber defense also broke up nearly every Brockport opportunity, with just eight shots put up for the Golden Eagles. Goalie Abby Cannon made her first start of the season and recorded two saves.

The last time the Bombers scored nine goals in a game was back in 2013 over Morrisville. That game and the win over Brockport are tied for the highest scoring contests since a 12-1 win over Oswego in 1996.

Ithaca's offensive pressure started early, as the Bombers dominated time of possession and put up the first nine shots of the game. Their first goal came about five minutes into the first quarter, as Toni Ierardi set up Mia Woodard close to the net and her shot rolled to the left of Brockport goalie Lauren Mastromarco.

Brockport upped the pressure early in the second quarter, putting up four of the first eight shots after the break, but Cannon was able to show off her range in net, making diving and leaping stops to shut Brockport down.

Down the stretch of the first half, Ithaca broke the game open with three more goals from three different scorers. The Bombers swarmed the net throughout the final minutes of the half, and Schoenfeld set up Caroline Folan for the first goal of the quarter. Breeah Shaw and Ainsley Grant were the next two to net goals, with Grant's swatted in the air to find the high edge of the net.

After two assists in the first half, Schoenfeld scored the lone goal in the third quarter of action about four minutes in.

Brockport threatened down the stretch of the quarter, but Ithaca blew the game open by scoring three goals in the first two minutes of quarter to make it an eight-goal Bomber lead. The first goal came off a corner; Schoenfeld inserted the ball to Ella Carwile and found her way to the net as Carwile set Schoenfeld up for the score. This was followed by Szwast's two scores, both rocketing shots up the middle of the scoring circle.

About four minutes later, first-year Addison Heuck netted the final goal of the night on the setup from Shaw. Neither Szwast nor Heuck had recorded a shot on the season before this game, and all three of their first combined shots scored.

Ithaca maintained possession much of the rest of the way and ran out the clock to secure the shutout victory.

The Bombers will look to keep their momentum strong through the rest of non-conference play. They will face SUNY New Paltz on Saturday and University of Scranton on Tuesday for their final two games before Liberty League play begins. Both those games will take place at Higgins Stadium.
