No. 19 Ithaca Men’s Wrestling Leads After Day One of Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 19-ranked Ithaca College men's wrestling team opened its season in dominant fashion at the 42nd Annual Ithaca Invitational, held inside the Athletics & Events Center. After the first day of competition, the Bombers sit atop the team standings with 105 points.
 
Ithaca is hosting a strong field that includes Vermont State University Castleton, Pennsylvania College of Technology, Springfield, Norwich, Cortland, Oswego State, Elmira College, and Greensboro.
 
The Bombers have 13 wrestlers still in contention and will enter tomorrow's semifinal bouts looking to build on their impressive start. Below is a breakdown of qualifiers by weight of those student-athletes who will be entering semis.
 
125 lbs.: Cosmo Damiani (2-0), Tomah Gummow (2-0)
For the second-straight season, both Bombers were perfect after the first day of competition. In his first bout of the season, Tomah Gummow pinned Oswego State's Nahjeed Abel in 1:05. He followed it up with a clinical effort on the mat scoring a 16-3 major decision over Hunter Sanchez of Springfield. Gummow, seeded first in the bracket will take on Castleton's Avi Berg in his morning matchup.
 
Damiani was also able to score at will over both of his initial opponents scoring an 11-2 major over Ben Fournier followed by a 22-13 major over Oswego State's Juan Roque. He will also battle an opponent from Castleton in his next bout against Andrew Marchese.
 
133 lbs.: George McAteer (3-0), Jay McDonnell (2-0)
First year George McAteer got off to a hot start as he earned the decisive 16-1 tech fall over Elmira's Devin Strothers. He would then take down Jack Callahan (6-3), before scoring his second tech of the day, this time 19-3 over Norwich's Carver Moyer.
 
Seeded No. 3 in the bracket, Jay McDonnell and took care of business going 2-0. He scored both his victories via falls over Frank Downing in 2:17 and Jaden Colwell of Springfield in 3:29.
 
141 lbs.: Isaias Torres (3-0), Ben White (3-0)
Isaias Torres scored career win No. 100 after he was another Bomber who got their invite off to a perfect start. After going up 7-0, Torres eventually pinned Aiden Stuart in 1:24 and hit the milestone for his career in his next bout when he pinned Castleton's Elijah Farias in 2:05. He would then win his quarterfinals bout over Chase Shaner via a 11-2 major decision.
 
A two-sport athlete and member of the IC soccer program, Ben White was uber impressive in his wrestling debut. All three of his victories were scored via falls with the most impressive being in his quarterfinal bout where he took down the No. 6 seeded Hunter Lines, pinning him in 1:08.
 
149 lbs.: Will Bentrim (3-0)
Another Bomber that went 3-0 on the day was Will Bentrim who got it started with a 58 second pin over Castleton's John Marcellus. He was scoring left and right on the mat in his 22-3 tech fall over Oswego State's Donvan Rail and capped his day by wrestling to his game and upsetting No. 6 seeded Gregory Barnett (Greensboro), 8-0.
 
157 lbs.: Akio Sanders (2-0)
Akio Sanders was a perfect 2-0, scoring falls over Gannon White (4:30) and Castleton's Dylan Vanegas (3:42) in his quarterfinal matchup.
 
165 lbs.: Chris Reddy (3-0)
After going 22-12 in his first season as a Bomber, Reddy began his campaign with a 16-8 major over Cortland's Gianni Delgado. He would then pin JT Roden before taking down another Red Dragon in Tristian Robinson-July in a 22-5 tech fall. He takes on Springfield's Gabe Thomasson in the semis in what should be a good matchup.
 
174 lbs.: Konrad Parker (3-0)
Now in his senior season, Konrad Parker was the top-seeded wrestler at 174 and he breezed through his first three opponents. He scored back-to-back pins over Max Fredericks and Christopher Coleman and would then take down Castleton's Lucas Schnell in the quarterfinals, in a 15-0 tech fall.
 
184 lbs.: Eamon Callaghan (2-0)
Callaghan won his opening bout over Castleton's Braedon Gray by taking him down in a 17-2 tech fall. He would win the same way, this time 18-1 over Matthew Hoxie of Springfield. Next up, he will take on No. 3 seeded Avery Costanzo in the semis.
 
197 lbs.: Ryan Galka (2-0)
Galka also scored at will in his opening bout winning via a 15-0 tech fall over Nick Blitz. He then had a tough opponent in Castleton's Josh Negron as it went the distance before Galka prevailed, 10-3. He will take on No. 2 seeded Nick Rogers in his semifinal bout.
 
285 lbs.: Kamdyn Dorchester (2-0)
Dorchester had a tough opening bout, but he ended up defeating Colton Perkins in a 4-3 decision. The first year then followed it up with an immediate 11-1 major decision over Oswego State's Dustin Koskinen-Falls. He's going to take on No. 3 Nicholai Brotzman of Penn College of Technology in his next matchup.
 
Wrestling will begin tomorrow morning with first whistle on the mats set to blow at 10 a.m. The Bombers also have several other student-athletes also in contention in the consolation brackets looking to battle their way back.
