Sophie White Equalizes in the Second Half in Tie at Skidmore

10/4/2025 5:11:00 PM

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's soccer team picked up a 1-1 tie against the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds thanks to a second-half momentum switch and equalizer off the boot of Sophie White.

With less than 20 minutes remaining and Ithaca trailing 1-0, Julia D'Anza sent a through ball into the center of the box. Sophie White collected the pass and slotted it past Skidmore goalkeeper Avery Rodgers to level the score at 1-1.

On paper, the matchup looked to be a good one. Historically, the Bombers controlled the series with a 21-3-6 all-time record and a three-game win streak. However, the Bombers entered the game with a 3-4-2 season record and a 0-2-0 record in Liberty League play, while the Thoroughbreds had a 4-2-2 record with a 2-0-0 record in Liberty League play.

The Bombers first opportunity came in the 9th minute when Lilyana Baldi tried to cross the ball to Reese Ruegamer who was running into the right side of the box. However, Baldi's pass went out of bounds as Ruegamer was restricted by her defender.

Skidmore quickly struck back in the 15th minute. Olivia Chandler dribbled down the left side and crossed the ball to the center of the box, where Madison Hallet finished with accuracy to give the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead.

Riding that momentum, Skidmore nearly doubled their score in the 24th minute. Hannah Fetzer struck the ball to the right center of the goal, but Katrina Varnum made a diving save to send the ball off target.

Fetzer added two more shots on target before halftime, but neither found the net as the Thoroughbreds carried a 1-0 lead into the break.

Statistically, Skidmore controlled the first half, recording four shots on goal to Ithaca's one.

The Bombers came into the second half with the first shot. It was a long strike from the boot of Reese Ruegamer on the right side of the field that sailed off target.

The Bombers were looking like they flipped the switch with five shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Ava Detorie almost scored a wicked goal from outside the box when she hit the ball with power from the right side, however the ball went too far left.

Ithaca continued pressing and got a near scoring chance when they got the ball into the box from a corner kick. After multiple deflections, Sophie White shot the ball to the low center of the net but Rodgers was able to make a save. Not even two minutes later, White received the ball off Bogle's through pass that went through three defenders. With no defenders around her, White effortlessly shot the equalizer to the right side past Rodgers.

In the 86th minute, Ithaca nearly completed the comeback when Baldi took a shot from the center of the box off a cross, but Rodgers made the save to preserve the draw.

The Bombers record goes to 3-4-3 on the season and 0-2-1 in Liberty League play. They will look to grab their first conference win of the season when they host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, October 11 at 2 p.m.
