GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team secured a huge Liberty League win on the road against William Smith College on Saturday with a 1-0 overtime victory over the Herons. The victory secures Ithaca's spot in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament as the Bombers are now 11-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
IC currently sits in fourth in the Liberty League standings but could move into third depending on the result of Rochester and William Smith next Wednesday. As it stands, the Bombers would be on the road for their Liberty League Tournament opener, but a move up to third would award IC a home game on November 4.
Ithaca controlled play in the first quarter with a 4-1 edge in shots, but only one was on target and was stopped by a defensive save. William Smith flipped momentum in the second period, outshooting the Bombers, 4-0, but two were saved by
Maeve Clark.
The second half was also controlled by the Bombers with another 4-1 edge in shots, two in each quarter, and William Smith made a save in each period. The Herons took two shots in the half with one on cage.
The decisive moment came in overtime when the Bombers broke through to score the winning goal 33 seconds into the first and only overtime quarter.
Eliza Ballaro, a senior captain midfielder, clinched this much needed win.
Next, the Bombers face Oneonta on the road on Wednesday, October 29.
