ONEONTA, N.Y. - Under the glow of stadium lights, the Ithaca College field hockey team battled the Oneonta Red Dragons on the road and emerged victorious with a hard-fought 2-0 win on Wednesday evening. Ithaca is now 12-5 on the season.
The opening quarter saw both teams battle it out, though Oneonta managed to test junior goalkeeper
Abby Cannon with four shots on goal. Cannon stood tall, keeping the scoreboard clean with three saves.
The Bombers struck early in the second quarter, capitalizing on an offensive corner just four minutes in. Senior midfielder
Brenna Schoenfeld tipped in a well-placed shot from
Eliza Ballaro, giving Ithaca the edge, 1-0. The remainder of the quarter was a back-and-forth tug-of-war, with neither side able to execute another goal in the cage.
The third quarter came around with the Red Dragons coming out strong, luckily the Bombers shut them down and put another goal in with less than eight minutes on the clock for a 2-0 advantage.
Payton Yahner had a fast break, and her gorgeous hit was tipped in by junior striker
Ainsley Grant.
The fourth quarter saw no change to the scoreboard, as Ithaca's defense held strong and Oneonta failed to mount a comeback.
Ithaca is on the road once again this Saturday, November 1st, facing No. 19 Haverford College for their last non-conference, regular season game. IC also secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and will head to Union College on November 7.
