Baseball Wins Rubber Match with Rochester, 5-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team won the final game of a three-game series against the University of Rochester, 5-1, at Freeman Field on Sunday. Ithaca took two-of-three from Rochester this weekend to improve its record to 21-9 overall and 9-2 in the Liberty League West.

Danny Drotos cruised through the first three innings by putting the Yellowjackets down in order as he notched a pair of strikeouts, five groundouts and two flyouts.

The Bombers threatened to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the second as Collin Feeney reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball, but IC's next two batters were retired to keep the game scoreless.

IC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single down the right field line by Louis Fabbo. Riley Brawdy scored on the base hit after reaching on a walk and moving into scoring position on a failed pick off attempt.

Rochester tied the game in the top of the fourth as a lead-off error moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on a single to left field with one out.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bombers regained the lead, 2-1, as Feeney scored on a wild pitch. Feeney led off with a single and moved over to third on an error.

The Yellowjackets put two runners on to begin the sixth on a hit by pitch and single, but IC got out unscathed as Drotos recorded the first out on a strikeout and then Tyler Pugliese threw a runner out at third and the inning came to an end with a lineout to second base.

Ithaca put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth as Colin Shashaty and Brawdy reached base on base hits and then Ethan McDonough drew a walk to load the bases. Shashaty scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1 and Rochester loaded the bases again with an intentional walk to Louis Fabbo. UR avoided further damage as a crucial stop in the infield with a full count ended the inning on a 6-3 putout.

IC went to the bullpen in the seventh as Dan Allard entered in relief and logged a pair of strikeouts looking to keep the Bombers ahead by two runs.

Drotos finished his outing with five strikeouts to no walks and three hits allowed over 6.0 innings for his first win of the year.

The Bombers plated two more runs in the bottom of the seventh as Colin Dunn and Feeney both scored on a wild pitch to extend IC's lead to 5-1, which was the eventual final score.

Ithaca had a chance to add more in the eighth as the Bombers loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch, but a tapper back to the pitcher accounted for the second out and then a runner was picked off to end the inning.

UR placed two runners on in the top of the ninth on a pair of infield singles, but Conor Burns closed out the game with two strikeouts and a groundout.

The Bombers will travel to Brockport on April 24 for a non-conference matchup at 4 p.m. IC concludes its Liberty League slate on April 26-27 against Hobart.
