RIT Baffles Ithaca to Open Three-Game Series, 4-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team suffered a 4-1 Liberty League loss to RIT at Freeman Field on April 7. Ithaca is now 14-9 on the season and 5-2 in the Liberty League. IC and RIT will conclude the three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader in Rochester.

The Bombers fell behind, 2-0, in the top of the third inning as the IC defense committed four errors leading to both runs coming home.

Ithaca put its first scoring chance together in the bottom of the fourth as Matt Curtis led off with a hit by pitch and then Ryan Laubscher drew a walk. Curtis was then thrown out attempting to steal third for the first out and Gil Merod followed with a walk, which would have loaded the bases with no one out. A line out to left and strikeout ended the inning.

RIT extended its lead to 4-0 in the sixth on an RBI double that pushed a run home from first, followed by a sacrifice fly to center a few batters later.

The Bombers put two more runners on bases in the seventh but were unable to generate anything further and RIT maintained its 4-0 lead heading to the eighth.

Ithaca escaped further damage in the top of the eighth as Riley Brawdy and Ethan Rothstein each made tremendous diving stops in the infield to keep the Tigers from scoring.

The Bombers would get on the board in the bottom of the eighth on a double play that brought in Louis Fabbo.

Colin Leyner struck out six batters in 6.0 innings in the loss. John Griffin, Dan Kellechan and Erislandy Rives all threw an inning of relief.
