GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team earned a pair of Liberty League victories over Hobart College, 7-0 and 13-9, in what was the first two meetings between the two schools since 1995 at McDonough Park on Thursday evening. Ithaca is now 22-12 overall and 11-5 in the Liberty League.
GAME ONE: Ithaca 7, Hobart 0
Kyle Lambert improved to 4-2 on the season as he allowed just two hits and two walks over 7.0 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts to highlight the opener, while
Garrett Callaghan went 3-for-4 with three RBI, three runs scored and two home runs.
Ryan Laubscher,
Colin Shashaty and
Riley Brawdy each recorded two hits in the opener as well.
The Bombers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Callaghan drove home
Ethan Rothstein with a single to right and then Laubscher plated Callaghan with a base hit to left.
IC's lead grew to 5-0 in the fifth as Callaghan belted a solo home run to get the rally started and Shashaty followed with an RBI double, bringing in Laubscher. Brawdy pushed in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Shashaty then scored in the seventh on a wild pitch and throwing error to make it a 6-0 difference and Callaghan capped off the game with a solo shot in the ninth.
Jack Colyer and
Erislandy Rives combined for five strikeouts in 2.0 innings of relief.
GAME TWO: Ithaca 13, Hobart 9
Callaghan continued his onslaught on Hobart pitching in the night cap as he belted two more home runs and drove in four in a 2-for-3 outing with three runs scored. Shashaty collected another two-hit game, while
Collin Feeney was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and two walks.
Matt Fabian also went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI.
Colin Leyner tossed 5.0 innings for his fifth win of the year as he struck out five and allowed one run on three hits.
IC scored twice in the top of the first inning as Feeney scored on a wild pitch and Shashaty picked up an RBI single.
In the third, Callaghan increased IC's lead to 3-0 with a solo homer and then Hobart scored its first run of the doubleheader in the bottom half to make it a 3-1 game.
The Bombers then blew the game open with four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to extend the difference to 11-1.
Mike Nauta doubled in Feeney to start the fifth and the Fabian ripped an RBI double to right, allowing Callaghan to score. Shashaty finished off the fifth with a sac fly.
In the sixth, Rothstein stroked a solo home run to center and Callaghan smacked a three-run homer to right.
The Statesmen put together a late comeback effort with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and five in the bottom of the seventh, but IC's lead was too much after two more runs scored in the top half of the seventh on back-to-back bases loaded walks to
Marc Filler-Berroll and
Josh Kaplan.
Ithaca and Hobart will completed the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Freeman Field.
