AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Ithaca College baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Wheaton (Mass.) at Lake Myrtle Park, but the Lyons battled back and eventually won the contest, 7-6, in 10 innings. Ithaca is now 7-5 on the year with one game remaining in Florida.
The Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as
Garrett Callaghan belted a solo home run. Callaghan then extended IC's lead to 5-0 with a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning with
Louis Fabbo,
Riley Brawdy and
Ethan Rothstein on base.
Wheaton got back into the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single and a pair of home runs. In the seventh, the Lyons tied the contest at 5-5 with an RBI double and then took a 6-5 lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.
A sacrifice fly from
Connor Pedersen in the top of the ninth brought in Fabbo to send the game into extra innings.
Wheaton walked off with the win after loading the bases in the bottom of the 10th and plating the winning run on a base hit to right-center.
Callaghan went 2-for-4, while Fabbo was 2-for-6. Rothstein,
Ryan Laubscher and
Gil Merod also had two-hit games for the Bombers.
Garrett Bell started on the mound and struck out eight over 6.0 innings of work with four earned runs and eight hits allowed.
John Griffin tossed an inning of relief, while
Matt Chase took the loss in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Ithaca will play No. 11 Rowan at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
