ARLINGTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team opened up Liberty League play on Friday evening as the Bombers were on the road at Vassar College. The Brewers used a strong third quarter to pull away 78-68 as they improved to 6-1 and 1-0 in conference play while IC dropped to 4-2 and 0-1 in LL play.
Camryn Coffey was electric from the field as she poured in a season-high 21 points on 8-11 of shooting and 3-of-5 from downtown. She also chipped in seven rebounds and a pair of assists. Also scoring in double figures for the Bombers was
June Dickson who scored 14, while
Annabella Yorio battled foul trouble but still put up eight points and five boards. Vassar made the most of the Bombers 17 turnovers outscoring them 17-8 on points off turnovers.
Coffey got the scoring started with a 3-pointer that was assisted by Yorio. The Bombers would then trail 11-5 after Sierra McDermed netted a trey of her own at the 5:05 mark but IC would fight back to tie it 11 points apiece with a tough layup from
Graycen Dubin. The teams would trade buckets but a jumper from
June Dickson made it 16-13 with 1:51 left in the opening stanza.
Camryn Coffey drained another 3-pointer to put Ithaca up 19-15 with 55 seconds left, but Vassar would score last with Maddie Ahearn draining both of her free throw attempts.
Vassar outscored the Bombers 19-16 during the next 10 minutes of play. However, it was Ithaca that dominated the early portions of the quarter establishing a nine point advantage with another
Camryn Coffey trey, this time coming off an assist from
Hannah Polce that saw their team up 30-21. The Brewers would go on a scoring spurt of their own and would tie it at 32 points apiece with 2:37 left and went into the halftime break leading 36-35.
The third quarter would see the home team Vassar establish the momentum going up by double digits stretching the lead to as much as 12 with a Tova Galeb layup (49-37). The Bombers would close out the last 5:49 clawing back to 51-47 with a
Hannah Polce 3-pointer with 29 seconds left, but Julia Harvey matched it on the other end of the court sinking her attempt with four seconds left.
Vassar would establish nine point leads on two different occasions in the fourth quarter as Ithaca continued to fight back bringing the deficit to three points (69-66) with a Coffey jumper in the paint with 2:32 remaining. The Brewers closed the game holding IC to just two points while scoring seven to secure the win.
The Bombers remain on the road as they look to return to their winning ways at Bard College with a 2 p.m. tip-off slated for Saturday, December 2.
