ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 23 Ithaca College women's volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday at the RIT Brick City Invitational as the Bombers dropped their opening match to Stevens in five sets and then swept Denison. Ithaca is now 16-4 on the year.
STEVENS 3, ITHACA 2 (26-24, 18-25, 25-19, 22-25, 13-15)
The Bombers saw its 10-match winning streak come to an end in their opening match on Saturday against Stevens. The Ducks overcame a 2-1 deficit to win the final two sets, 25-22 and 15-13.
The first set of the match went to extra points and ended in IC's favor after back-to-back kills from
Jamie Koopman and
Naomi Clauhs.
Ithaca led late in the set, 22-20, but Stevens went on a 3-0 run to go ahead, 23-22. IC answered with two points on kills from
Gabriela Gonzalez-Abreu and Koopman to get to set point, but the Ducks knotted it up on the next service to send the set into extra points.
Stevens controlled the second set with 15 kills and a .351 hitting percentage. It was tight early on as the Bombers led, 11-10, but Stevens scored eight of the next nine points to even the match at 1-1.
IC answered in the third set, 25-19, with a spark from a 5-0 run in the middle stages behind two hitting errors from Stevens, kills from Clauhs and
Faith Sabatier and an ace by
Peyton Miller.
It was a similar scene in the fourth set, as IC and Stevens were evenly matched up to a 10-9 lead for the Bombers. Stevens then ran off seven straight to go up, 16-10, but the Bombers fought back with a run of their own to deadlock the set at 18-18. It was back and forth from there, and ultimately Stevens prevailed by scoring three of the final four points.
In the final set, IC jumped out to a 4-1 lead with an ace from Miller and kill by
Ella Graper. The Bombers kept their lead up to 8-6, but Stevens scored the next four to go ahead, 10-8. The teams traded points the rest of the way to get to the 15-13 final.
Gonzalez-Abreu put down 21 kills, while Clauhs added 17 kills on a .350 hitting percentage. Koopman also reached double digits with 12 kills on a .423 percentage and
Maddie Cox dished out 50 assists.
Four Bombers registered double digit digs, as Miller led the way with 17.
Ellie Benedict added 14, while
Julia Costa finished with 13 and Cox chipped in 12.
ITHACA 3, DENISON 0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-20)
In the final match of the weekend, the Bombers produced five different runs of five or more points over the three sets.
IC trailed, 6-3, in the first set but scored the next eight to go ahead, 11-6. After Denison got back to within 13-10, IC responded with six of the next seven to secure the 1-0 lead in the match.
Ithaca jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the second set, but Denison fought back to take a 9-8 edge. IC then scored five in a row to keep the lead for good, although the Big Red would get to within a point at 23-22. IC ended the set with kills from Gonzalez-Abreu and Sabatier.
Denison came out firing in the third set, building a 4-0 edge, but the Bombers would run off six straight points to secure a 6-4 edge. The Bombers then went up, 16-10, thanks to four attack errors by Denison, but the Big Red regrouped and pulled to within an 18-16 difference.
From there, IC scored five straight to own a seven-point edge at 23-16. Denison once again fought back to within 23-20, but
Wesley Slavin and Clauhs ended the match with kills.
Gonzalez-Abreu once again led IC with 13 kills, while Koopman finished the match with seven. Slavin handed out 31 assists and Costa recorded 15 digs.
The Bombers host William Smith on October 17 for a Liberty League showdown at 6 p.m. in Ben Light Gymnasium.
