AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Ithaca College baseball program picked up a marquee win for the 2022 season as the Bombers defeated No. 11 Wheaton (Mass.), 3-2, at Lake Myrtle Park on Friday morning. Ithaca is now 9-2 on the season and concludes its spring trip to Florida tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Stevenson.
Friday's early morning contest was a true pitcher's duel as
Kyle Lambert and Wheaton's Griffin Young hung zeros on the board for six innings.
The Bombers would strike first with a run in the top of the seventh as
Ethan Rothstein drove home
Gil Merod with a single to center field, but the Lyons responded with two runs in the bottom half the of seventh on an RBI base hit and error.
Lamber was knocked out of the game after 6.2 innings pitched as he struck out 10 and gave up six hits and four walks.
IC knotted the contest at 2-2 in the top of the eighth on a RBI double off the bat of
Buzz Shirley, which brought in
Riley Brawdy, and took Young out of the game for Wheaton.
Young fanned 12 batters over 7.1 innings of work with no walks and allowed two runs on eight hits.
The Bombers regained the lead in the ninth as
Collin Feeney belted an RBI triple to centerfield, bringing in
Matt Fabian for the eventual game-winning run.
Wheaton picked up a lead-off single in the bottom of the ninth, but
Erislandy Rives set the next three batters down in order, to earn the victory in 2.1 innings of relief. Rives allowed just one hit and struck out three.
Four Bombers recorded multi-hit games in the win – Shirley, Merod, Fabian and Feeney.
