POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team put together arguably their top performance of the season on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 1-0 win over Clarkson University. The Bombers improved to 3-4-3 and victory was the first over the Golden Knights since September 22, 2000.
Ithaca opened the scoring within the 13
th minute on an outstanding individual effort from
Connor Tierney. The first-year midfielder won the second ball off an IC throw and curled his shot attempt into the upper righthand corner of the goal past the opposing keeper Bryan Benitez. It was Tierney's first goal of his collegiate career.
IC went into the halftime break leading 1-0 as both teams managed three shot attempts with
Connor Tierney's goal the only shot that was placed on target within the first 45 minutes of the match. The Bombers nursed their lead through the second half of play as the defensive backline stayed composed to help keep the clean sheet.
Clarkson University pushed for an equalizer in the final 10 minutes of play, but each attempt was stymied including a
Lee Folger save on a shot attempt to his right side of the goal frame just about as time expired. The Golden Knights had another bout of solid offensive possession, but the IC backline was up to the task as a Mack Walton shot attempt in the 88
th minute was blocked by a defender.
Folger once again made the start in goal for the Bombers and he tallied three saves in the IC win to improve to 1-0-1. Ithaca College finished with five shot attempts with three placed on frame compared to the nine attempts and three on target from the Golden Knights.
Ithaca College will look to keep building momentum now that the team is in the midst of Liberty League conference action. The Bombers return to the field on Wednesday, September 24 when they host Hobart College at Carp Wood Field. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
