Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 23 Men’s Soccer Nets an Overtime Goal to Topple Medaille College

BUFFALO, N.Y. – After a scoreless first half, both teams netted a goal within the second period to send Wednesday's season-opener to a sudden death overtime period. In the 98th minute, Ithaca College's Aidan Keenan stole victory at the death of the match heading in an effort off a Brendan Lebitsch feed. The No. 23 ranked team in NCAA Division III smartly played a long ball off a free kick in its defensive third which was earned on an offside call in which Medaille College had thought they had secured the upset, but the Bombers remained even keel and Lebisch headed in the goal for the 2-1 overtime win.

The victory marked career win No. 1 for Ithaca's head coach Garret Eldridge as it was a very tough battle throughout against the Mavericks. It was even within the first half with Medaille holding the upper hand with nine shots, four of which were placed on the frame of goal. The teams went into the halftime break deadlocked at 0-0.

The match certainly opened up for the Bombers in the second half as they began stringing together dangerous passes that threatened the Medaille College defensive backline. However, it was the Maverick's who found the back of the net first striking on the counterattack with Aner Castillo slicing a shot past the IC goalkeeper Josh Koenig. Just under 10-minutes after the goal, IC's Ali Kapasi and Jonathan Kyriakidis ceased the momentum for the Bombers with Kapasi assisting the tying effort that was scored by the senior forward Kyriakidis in the 62nd minute.

The game went into the decisive overtime period tied at 1-1. The Mavericks thought they scored the game-winner off of a corner kick, but IC was smart to use the momentum to play a long ball into the opponents attacking third and Brendan Lebitsch chipped it to Keenan whose header sailed into the top right corner of the goal.

Ithaca finished with 19 shots overall with nine on goal and keeper Josh Koenig tallied eight saves. The Bombers will look to carry the excitement into its home-opener that is slated for this Saturday, September 4 against the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Game time from Higgins Stadium, the lone match of the season that they will play on the turfed facility at 3:30 p.m.
