POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team traveled up to Clarkson University on Saturday for a Liberty League doubleheader and wound up with a loss and tie as a total of 47 runs were scored. Ithaca is now 12-7-1 on the season and 7-2-1 in the Liberty League. The tie marks IC's first since 2012.
GAME ONE: Clarkson 15, Ithaca 10
Clarkson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run, two-out single down the left field line. IC walked two batters in the inning, which loaded the bases to set up the two-run base hit.
The Golden Knights added six more runs in the bottom of the second to establish an 8-0 lead. Back-to-back doubles led to the first run of the inning and then a passed ball and wild pitch brought in another. From there, two Ithaca errors and a sacrifice fly plated the final four runs.
Ithaca got on the board in the third inning with a five-run outburst to cut into Clarkson's lead, 8-5. IC quickly loaded the bases on walks to
Ethan McDonough and
Mike Nauta, and an error off the bat of
Matt Smith.
Louis Fabbo drove in Smith with a single and then
Jack Lynch drew a bases loaded walk.
Garrett Callaghan then plated Nauta with a groundout and
Buzz Shirley followed with a two-run double to right-center, allowing Lynch and Fabbo to cross the plate.
The Bombers tied the game in the top of the fifth as Callaghan drove an RBI single to left and then
Gil Merod stroked an RBI double to right-center. Fabbo scored on the Callaghan at bat and Lynch came home on the Merod extra base hit. The tying run scored on another bases loaded walk issued to Smith with Callaghan on third.
Clarkson went back ahead in the bottom of the fifth with another six-run frame to make the score 14-8. CU plated two runs on a double and passed ball and then Ithaca went to the bullpen. After the pitching change, scored four more runs off a single, double and error.
Clarkson added one more in the sixth before IC scored twice in the top of the seventh to account for the final tally of 15-10.
GAME TWO: Ithaca 11, Clarkson 11
The Bombers got off to a promising start in the nightcap by scoring seven runs over the opening two innings to build a 7-0 lead.
Shirley stroked a three-run homerun in the top of the first. McDonough then scored to begin the second inning on an error, Lynch followed with an RBI double and Callaghan drove in two on a single to mount the seven-run lead.
Clarkson answered with one run in the second and three more in the third to trim Ithaca' advantage down to 7-4 heading to the fourth.
The Bombers plated another run in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Shirley, but Clarkson answered with two more in the bottom half of the fourth to make the score 8-6.
IC pushes its lead back out to five in the fifth, 11-6, as Lynch drove home Nauta and Shirley followed with a two-run base hit to bring home Lynch and Fabbo.
Clarkson scratched two runs across in the seventh and then rallied in the bottom of the eighth with three more to tie the game at 11-11 before play was halted due to darkness.
Shirley drove in six runs in a 3-for-5 day at the plate, while Lynch was 4-for-6 with four runs scored.
Garrett Bell started the contest for IC and went 5.0 innings and struck out five.
Bo Nicholson allowed five runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of relief and
Dom Trippi tossed the final 2/3 in game two.
Ithaca travels to Bard on Wednesday, April 28 for another Liberty League doubleheader.
