Late Goal Propels Men's Lacrosse to Upset of No. 8 Union

Ithaca, N.Y. - Sophomore Jake Erickson found first year John Sramac cutting in front of the cage for the game-winning goal with seven seconds left to give the Ithaca College Men's Lacrosse team an upset victory over No. 8 Union College. The Bombers improved to 4-2 (2-1 Liberty League), on the year while handing Union (3-1, 2-1 Liberty League) its first loss of the season.

How it Happened: Union jumped out to a 2-0 lead just two minutes into the game. Senior Dillon Fitzpatrick got the Bombers on the board with 9:22 to go in the opening period off an assist from junior Jae Stuhlman as the shot clock was winding down. Senior Connor Brumfield found junior Blake Eischen on a similar end-of-shot clock play to tie the game at 2-2. Union answered right back with two goals, but Eischen netted his second of the day with 1:49 to go in the opening quarter.

The scoring continued in the second quarter, as Union opened up a 6-3 lead with two goals in a span of 20 seconds. Ithaca answered right back with three in a row to tie the game at 6-6, but regained the lead at 7-6 with 6:32 left on what would be the last goal of the quarter.

Union started the third quarter like it did the second, scoring two goals to regain a three-goal lead. Junior Drew Turner ended the scoring run with Ithaca's only goal of the third period to pull the Bombers within two goals of the Dutchmen.

Ithaca dominated the fourth quarter, scoring three goals in the first six minutes of the final period to take its first lead of the day at 10-9. Union tied the game back up with 4:51 to go and the teams began to trade turnovers and saves until Ithaca got the ball back with 1:17 to go and the shot clock turned off. The Bombers opted to not use their last timeout, and it paid off as Erickson and Sramac connected to give Ithaca its first win over a ranked opponent this season.

Game Leaders: Eischen led Ithaca's offense with a hat trick, which matched his career-high for goals. Fitzpatrick, senior Connor Till, and Sramac each had two goals, while Brumfield and Turner found the back of the net once. Erickson had a team-high two assists. Stuhlman and Brumfield each notched one helper.

Senior Jake Hall-Goldman led the defense with three caused turnovers. First year Hunter Wallace scooped up seven ground balls and sophomore Wesley Hudkins picked up four. Junior Cameron MacNicol won 11 of 24 faceoffs for Ithaca.

Junior Connor Thornton made 15 saves while allowing only 10 goals for a save percentage of .600.

Up Next: The Bombers will hit the road for their third game in a row against a top 15 opponent as they take on No. 14 St. Lawrence in Canton, N.Y. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
