ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team completed its season sweep of Vassar College on Wednesday afternoon at Freeman Field, as the Bombers came away with a 4-0 win in the opener and 13-6 victory in Game Two. With the wins, IC is now 9-5 on the season and 4-0 in the Liberty League.
In Game One,
Kyle Lambert tossed a complete game shutout, and in Game Two
Garrett Callaghan drove in six runs and belted two homeruns.
GAME ONE: ITHACA 4, VASSAR 0
The Bombers got on the board and took the lead, 1-0, in the bottom of the second inning as
Gil Merod led off with a double to right and
Alex Barker-Hook followed with an RBI double down the left field line. IC extended its lead to 2-0 as
Louis Fabbo drove home Barker-Hook with a groundout to short.
Ithaca threatened to add on in the third inning after a base hit, walk and hit by pitch, but the Bombers left the bases loaded. IC then placed a runner on third with less than two outs in the fourth but was once again unable to bring the runner home.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bombers put two runners in scoring position after a walk to
Matt Fabian and base hit from
Buzz Shirley, who moved up to second on the throw to third. The score remained 2-0 as IC fouled out and struck out twice.
Vassar put together its first true scoring threat of the opener in the sixth as the Brewers loaded the bases on three straight hits to begin the inning.
Kyle Lambert dug in and struck out the next two batters and induced an inning-ending fielder's choice to keep the shutout intact.
Lambert tossed a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts in his second win of the season. Lambert allowed six hits and two walks throughout the outing.
The Bombers were finally able to push a run home in the sixth on an infield single by
Jack Lynch, which brought in
Mike Nauta to extend IC's lead to 3-0. Nauta reached on a hit by pitch, moved up to second on a sac bunt and over to third on a wild pitch. Ithaca tacked on one more as Shirley drove home Lynch with a base hit back up the middle.
Shirley went 2-for-3, while Fabian was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks. Nauta and Lynch each stole a base, while Nauta reached three times – 1-for-1 with two hit by pitches.
GAME TWO: ITHACA 13, VASSAR 6
IC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Game Two as
Aaron Shoemaker drew a bases loaded walk with Fabbo on third. Fabbo led off the inning with a hit by pitch and advanced to third after walks to Fabian and Shirley. The inning ended as Fabian attempted to score on a ball that got away from Vassar's catcher and was tagged out.
The Bombers plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning without recording a hit to build a 4-0 lead. Barker-Hook, Nauta and Fabbo all walked to load the bases. Lynch then drew the fourth free pass of the inning to bring home Barker-Hook and then Nauta scored on a wild pitch. Fabbo accounted for the third run of the frame on a groundout by
Garrett Callaghan.
IC increased its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homerun to right by Callaghan with Lynch on base.
Vassar ended its scoring drought in the top of the fifth as the Brewers plated three runs on two hits and three IC errors. The Brewers' first run crossed home on a wild pitch and the second scored on a safety squeeze. The third run was driven in on a single to centerfield.
The Brewers pulled to within a 6-4 difference in the top of the sixth on an RBI double down the left field line.
Callaghan smashed another homer in the bottom of the sixth, this time a three-run shot, to push IC's lead back out to five runs at 9-4. IC added four more runs in the inning as
Aaron Shoemaker drove an RBI single to center to bring home Fabian from second and then a sac fly from
Matt Smith brought in Shoemaker to make the score 11-4. Nauta followed with an RBI double to left, which scored Barker-Hook, and then Fabbo capped off the seven-run inning by driving in Nauta with a single to left.
Vassar would score two more runs in the seventh to account for the final score, 13-6.
Shirley started Game Two for IC and went 4.0 innings in a no decision. Shirley struck out six and walked four with two unearned runs allowed.
Nate Scott entered in relief in the fifth and tossed 1.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts and two runs (one earned) surrendered for his first win of the year.
Garrett Bell,
Matteo Ragusa and
Matt Chase combined to throw the final 3.2 innings of the contest and struck out five batters.
The Bombers will host Bard this Sunday, April 18 for a Liberty League doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
