Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team held leads at two different points of Sunday's Liberty League Championship, but the highly contested affair ended up going into overtime and with 3:25 left in the second overtime period Merilyn Hinrichs netted the game-winner for William Smith. With the win, the nationally ranked Herons captured their 14
th straight Liberty League tournament title.
The game-winner in the 107
th minute was a left-footed shot that bounced off the crossbar but spun into the lower right-hand corner of the net as the top-seeded team in the tournament, William Smith just got away with the title as they played the role of heartbreakers for the Ithaca College faithful.
It was a very evenly played first half as each team felt each other out over the first 25-minutes of the match. The Bombers opened the scoring in the 30
th minute when
Rosie Bostian floated and curled her shot over the outstretched arms of Amanda Kesler. Bostian stole the ball from a Heron defender dribbled into the 18-yard box and chipped the ball into the back of the net.
The Bombers carried the 1-0 lead into the halftime break, but William Smith managed 10 shots compared to IC's four.
Claire Reader made three saves within the opening 45-minutes of play as the sophomore was on the top of her game all afternoon long.
William Smith ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III, searched for their equalizer and a dangerous Katherine Berg shot attempt was blocked by
Kate Kohler in front of the goal frame and the defender smartly cleared the ball up the field.
The Herons tied it at 1-1 in the 80
th minute as Julia Keogh collected a rebound in the 18-yard box and whipped her shot past a diving Reader. Nine minutes later in the 89
th minute of play, the Bombers thought they had won it all when
Alex Epifani chipped a shot from just outside of the 18-yard box that was misplayed by the William Smith goalkeeper and found the back of the net. Just 39 seconds later, the Herons tied it once again. On the ensuing kickoff they marched down the field and after a few quick passes the ball found the right foot of Katherine Berg who blasted her shot into the lower left-hand corner of the cage.
Claire Reader made an outstanding save in the first overtime period to keep it tied but it was Merilyn Hinrichs who won it all for William Smith in the second 10-minute overtime. Reader finished with seven saves for the Bombers playing 106:35 minutes in goal.
Ithaca College dropped to 14-4 overall but will turn its attention to the NCAA Division III tournament.
