ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team saw an opposing goal scored in the first half of play by RPI but were unable to mount a comeback at Carp Wood Field as they fell to the Engineers by a 1-0 score. The Engineers are now atop the Liberty League with a 10-2-2 overall record and are 6-1 within the conference while Ithaca dropped to 7-5-4 and 5-1-1.
The decisive goal was scored in the 39
th minute by Julio Rodriguez who netted on a volley from the left side of the 18-yard box and curled it around goalkeeper
Lee Folger. The ball fell to Rodriguez after Collin Shust headed it away from the front of the net, but unfortunately it fell to an unmarked Julio Rodriguez who fired it into the back of the net with his left foot.
The Engineers recorded the final two shots of the half and went into halftime with the 1-0 lead. Both teams tallied six shots within the opening 45 minutes of play and
Lee Folger made two saves during that time.
Ithaca College played the final 34:17 of the match a man up but couldn't make the most of the advantage. RPI was forced to play down a man thanks to a red card after Joe Di Miceli denied a clear scoring opportunity from the Bombers as they were on the counter attack on a run right in front of the box. The ensuing free kick that was taken by
Ali Kapasi but was blocked by the Engineers wall and their goalkeeper made a pair of saves to hold on for the shutout.
The Bombers had a few dangerous scoring chances down the stretch utilizing their 6-0 advantage in corner kicks but were denied each time as they were unable to find the equalizer. They finished the match outshooting RPI by an 14-8 margin, placing five of those shots on the goal frame.
Ithaca will look to rebound playing their final two matches of the regular season on the road. They will square off against RIT on Tuesday, October 27 playing under the lights with the game time slated for 7 p.m.
